The Chapman Insurance Agency was founded in 1934 by Edwin F. Chapman and operated in downtown St. Louis. Upon his death in 1948, the business operations were taken over by his sons, R. E. (Bob) Chapman and William H. (Bill) Chapman, who maintained offices in the Old Orchard section of Webster Groves, Missouri for many years.
In 1972, the agency merged with The Sander Insurance Agency, forming Chapman-Sander, Inc. and another merger in 1984 brought The Schneiderhahn Insurance Agency into the business, which continued operating under the Chapman-Sander banner. In addition to Bill Chapman, management of the agency during that period consisted of Roy M. Sander and Lawrence (Larry) Schneiderhahn.
In 1990, new space was obtained for the expanded agency in Crestwood, Missouri and for 24 years, served the community from that location. In 1995 and additional principal, Ronald C. (Ron) Burlison joined the agency.
In August of 2009, UMB Financial Corporation purchased the assets of Chapman-Sander, Inc. and the agency became the first acquisition as part of the Bank’s retail insurance strategy, with Ron Burlison remaining as President.
In September of 2012 the Sunstar Insurance Group, LLC purchased the Chapman-Sander unit from UMB Financial as the initial step in an aggressive growth plan and remains an integral component of the company.
As of January 1, 2014 the agency established new quarters at 1715 Deer Tracks Trail in the city of Town & Country, in St. Louis County, Missouri.
